The BOHEMIA LUXEMBOURG TRIO

The ALEA TRIO

The BOHEMIA LUXEMBOURG TRIO

The Bohemia Luxembourg Trio is the first ever permanent chamber music ensemble to combine Czech and Luxembourg musicians.

It came about in two ways; firstly, Luxembourg flute player Carlo Jans had met the two ladies during his stays in Prague to record several of the excellent works for flute by Czech composer Jindrich Feld, one of these pieces having been specially written for the trio and orchestra . Secondly, Geoff Piper of MusicEnterprise, long resident in Luxembourg, a student of Czech affairs and an impresario for Czech musicians, was struck by the historic overtones of this combination and encouraged the trio to become permanent.

There were in fact particularly close dynastic links between the two countries in the 14th century, one of the most notable Luxembourg rulers, John of Luxembourg (John the Blind) and one of the most notable kings in Bohemian history, Charles IV, being father and son.

The existence of the Trio is thus a testimony to an historic awareness which is still alive.

The members:

Carlo Jans (Luxembourg) - flute
Jitka Hosprova (Czech Republic) - viola
Katerina Englichova (Czech Republic) - harp

The ALEA TRIO

The ALEA TRIO is the second of two ensembles combining Czech and Luxembourgish musicians. The first, the BOHEMIA LUXEMBOURG Trio came about mainly through the activities of Luxembourg flautist Carlo JANS, who took a keen interest in the works for flute by Czech composer Jindrich FELD and recorded these with the same trio and with two renowned Czech orchestras.
The role of MusicEnterprise was simply to encourage this trio to become a permanent chamber music ensemble and then promote it by various means.

The ALEA TRIO came about in different fashion ; not as the result of a fortuitous or even deliberate meeting of Czech and of Luxembourgish musicians wishing to perform together, but as a deliberate illustration of an important historical fact linking the two countries.
Luxembourg and Bohemia had close dynastic ties, particularly in the 14th century ; for example, John of Luxembourg (John the Blind), one of Luxembourg's most celebrated rulers, was the father of the Holy Roman Emperor and notable Bohemian king Charles IV.
The name « ALEA » (from Latin, as in « the die is cast » ) was a humourous suggestion from one of the players, signifying that the selection of the musicians by MusicEnterprise was partly fortuitous.
